Oil Pastels

I posted this on my Instagram account a while back and there was a lot of interest. I bought them on Amazon, of course- a really cheap stack of 100. Just search for bar coasters. It’s a quick, fun way to do some carefree scribbling. You can use any medium - acrylics, oils, mixed media - they all work great as long as you gesso the coasters first with either clear or regular gesso. I did these with oil pastels. Oil Pastels do not ever completely dry so check out my advice about oil pastel fixative here. I suppose if you covered your final piece with some sort of acrylic spray or varnish you could actually use them but for me, they are just a good a quick grab and go surface for mucking about.
