Set Up For Success

My Desktop - Ready For Play

There are many articles written about this subject and I can attest to the fact that there is something to be said for the idea of setting yourself up so you can just jump in and go when you’re ready. This is my current desk mess. It’s a happy mess and I love just sitting down with my second cup in the morning and diving in. If I have to drag all this stuff out every time I want to play in my sketchbook, trust me, it a’int gunna happen. I’m not saying you should have every supply you own out of your drawers and cabinets but I am suggesting you prepare a feast of your favorites and add and subtract according to your mood or intentions.

Always subject to change, these are the things I’m currently playing with the most.

I like to do anything that prepares me for a serious painting session well ahead of time as well - like applying gesso to canvases, or making marks in preparation for painting so I don’t have to face a blank white canvas. For me it’s best to do these mundane tasks at the end of the day when my creative juices are running dry and it’s almost wine time! Getting a surface prepared and your paints laid out when you’re ready to quit will set you up and not waste your creative time the next day. You can just walk into the studio and get started!
